BBC satellite channels changed frequency on Monday 18th Oct. See

http://www.bbc.co.uk/reception/info/sat_frequencies.shtml

If you experience a problem, reboot your receiver first of all before messing with any settings.

(I can't give any help if you do have problems since I can't receive BBC at all in Greece.)

I hope you all received my email about these BBC frequency changes. (If not, you should sign up for newsletter notifications. I occasionally send out urgent alerts.)

Most of you will not have noticed any difference. If you did have a problem, please let us know how you solved it and whether my warning helped.

If YOU spot any changes about to occur on Freeview, Freesat, Sky etc. then please write to me so I can tell everyone.

Thought you might be interested in the following information from Humax.

BBC 1 launches in HD on Freeview HD and Freesat boxes

Dear Humax user,

We are pleased to announce that another high quality HD channel is about to become available on our HD receivers and PVR's. BBC 1 HD is launching on the 3rd of November and you will have to retune your Freeview HD or Freesat box after launch to receive this channel. Full instructions on how to do this are available on the Humax web site.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to certain programmes being moved from the existing BBC HD channel to BBC 1 HD after launch, broadcast identifier information that the PVR's use for recording these programmes will be changing. This means that previously set series recordings on these BBC HD programmes will not work unless they have been deleted from the BBC HD schedule and reset against BBC 1 HD.

Best regards.

Malcolm Head.

In case you hadn't noticed, Christmas is fast approaching! November is the time to order your Christmas presents because, if you leave it till the December rush, deliveries may suffer delays and we may not have time to put right any mistakes before the holiday begins.

Here in Greece, everyone is preparing for the local elections. The voting system is not like that of the UK. Every town and village has its own candidates and has its own special voting forms for the three parties. Every resident gets to vote for one party only and can vote for up to five candidates - one in the village, three in the municipality and one in a separate municipality. Whichever party wins will have a huge problem because Greece is effectively bankrupt. In fact I read recently that the national debt is so big, it would require every person in Greece to pay a quarter of a million Euros to pay it off!

However, the cost of living on Crete is still generally lower than the UK so, provided you can get a cheap air fare, you can enjoy a relatively low-cost holiday here. Easy Jet is already taking bookings for May so have a look at the offers.

Monthly Whinge

There are many sellers on eBay who have very little knowledge of the products they are selling. The result is misleading claims that might fool you into buying something for the wrong reason. As an example, take LNB amplifiers. In almost all instances, a slightly larger dish will outperform a small dish with a booster. But that fact doesn't deter people from buying boosters!

See http://search.ebay.co.uk/sky-amplifier

Anonymous seller "d4nn7" offers:-

"New improved design to give a variable signal boost avoiding over amplifying stronger signals while giving extra amplification to lower signal channels. Will not give picture problems by over amplifying signals. Better performance on lower gain signals."

I can assure you that these claims are complete rubbish. It's a standard LNB signal amplifier with gain slope equalisation to compensate for long cable runs. If you feed it with a strong signal, it WILL over-amplify the signal. It has no built-in intelligence to prevent it from doing so.

But there's a lot of gullible people out there. If I had no conscience I'd put claims like this on everything I sell and make a fortune.

A company calling itself "Digitalis" gives a more honest (if misleading) explanation of the "equalised slope" amplifier. This is designed specifically to compensate for a long cable run. It has no other purpose than to overcome losses in a long cable.

A company calling itself GMAX is selling a very cheap LNB amplifier that does NOT have slope equalisation. It states "This excellent device is perfect for boosting a signal on a long run of cable." In fact the reverse is true because it has no gain equalisation. This amplifier is intended for boosting the signal to compensate for losses in an LNB switch or a signal splitter. It has no other purpose.

Let me explain briefly: Coaxial cable loses signal along its length and adds "noise". The signal losses are higher at higher frequencies. An amplifier with "equalised slope gain" gives an additional boost to higher frequencies so that all frequencies coming out of the far end of the cable are roughly equal in amplitude and at a high level compared with the "noise" added by the cable. It uses the same principle as a hearing aid for older people.

So you might need an "equalised slope" amplifier to compensate for a long cable run.

An amplifier without this feature will result in low frequencies being boosted more than high, resulting in unequal amplitude signals, which is bad news.

A drawback of all amplifiers is that they also add "noise" and they can only amplify what they receive. If the dish is too small and provides a weak, noisy signal, that's what gets amplified. (If you make enough weak tea to fill a bucket, you'll still have weak tea.)

Beware low prices on eBay. If it seems too cheap, it's probably either stolen or not what you think it is.

One for your WTF file, though I doubt any of it will come as any surprise to you ...

My friends mother phoned me the other week - the "Sky engineer" (yes I hate that too having an engineering degree) was there fitting her Sky+HD and Multiroom. Isn't it nice to have some notice ! I can't blame her for taking it, the deal she's got is cheaper than going out and buying a Freesat PVR, even over a couple of years - and with her eyesight going, she can't see well enough to work the video any more.

She put the technician on the phone. I explained that I'd fitted a Loftbox and he'd need to run the extra LNB cables into the loft. "Can't go up there" he replied bluntly - but I can put the cables over the roof". Yeuch - I'd put effort into getting rid of all the cables (Sky + TV + Radio) over the roof and down the front of the bungalow when I wired them up to pipe the Sky round the place via the RF2 output.

So he left it that I'd sort out the extra cables, and he'd come back and finish when I'd done it.

Next time I visited, I took one look at the TV and thought "that's not HD" - they have a 37" Samsung which has some rather ugly motion artifacts when upscaling SD. Picked up the remote, hit Info, and sure enough - it was using the SD signal via the SCART lead the twit had plugged back in when changing the box. Ripped that out, got HD - he had at least used the HDMI cable, but the TV was auto-selecting the SCART input !

Oh yes, and while I had the box pulled forwards, I found the LNB cable wasn't screwed in properly.

Last weekend I went round to get the extra cables in - not too bad a job. Got round to the new dish the guy had fitted with its 3 spare outputs all exposed to our coastal Cumbrian weather ... and found the other end of the cable wasn't even screwed up properly. Loose connector and no tape, grease, or weather boot.

I can only assume he was looking forward to the future callout fees to fix it in a few months time - and by then he could probably charge for replacing the cable as it would have been full of water.

My friends mother often comments along the lines of "how do people without a 'Simon' to help them cope ?" Based on my limited observations, it's no surprise I see so many badly set up systems.

Her original Sky wasn't set up that well. When her new TV was delivered and installed - the setup was (to be polite) utter rubbish. Now this lot.

And last night on an office lads night out, sat in the bar - there was a TV on the wall showing Sky ... with 4:3 stretched to a wide screen. I bet that's the sort of thing you notice as well - does that make us perfectionists or sad, hard to tell sometimes !

Of course, up in the loft, some of the cables that were neatly clipped to the timbers are now hanging like washing lines thanks to the roofers - she's recently had the roof retiled. Grrr, don't you just love that sort of tradesmen.

PS - Tried to register on your forum, but there is an email problem. Your end doesn't appear to be RFC compliant and fails to deliver messages if the first attempt isn't successful. Since I use greylisting as part of my spam controls, it means the activation email didn't arrive. I see one delivery attempt in my logs, then nothing :

Simon Hobson

Thanks, Simon. I contacted our ISP and they said that, while they appreciated that some people used your method of "spam control", it was frowned upon by many ISPs and was not considered a good method.

(My method is simply to change my email address periodically.)

We had planned our trip to the Algarve to the letter but one problem for me was how to watch my favourite programme. The villa has a community satellite TV selection but not the programme I like. In Portugal the programme is on a subscription channel so I was left in the position of either temporarily installing a 1.3m dish (which would not have gone down well with the wife) or popping off to a local bar (which would not have gone down well with the wife). However, I discovered it on a hidden transponder - perfect for a 60cm dish! Easy to put in the back of the car and easy to set up with my trusty little Promax meter.

The dish bolted nicely to the back of a chair on the terraced roof and with a loose cable feed to my Medion PVR, I not only was able to watch the practice & race for both the Belgium & Italian meetings but also did not spoil the holiday by adding Sky for my tv deprived children as most other channels were not available. Not to mention the rest of my family were busy sunning themselves around the pool whilst I happily watched the programme. So worth packing a small dish if you are in the area. If you need advice re. Sky reception on the Costa Del Sol or Algarve please email me at skydigital.tv(at)gmail.com

Inverto Ultra LNB - £14.99

There's nothing magic about this 0.2dB LNB but it has a long 40mm neck, allowing for a greater adjustment than normal. This lets you position the LNB at the exact focal point of your dish, so that you get the strongest possible signal.

It's a useful feature for those of you living in a weak signal area and for dishes with multiple LNBs where only the central LNB is optimally positioned. Shop Page

We'll shortly be including more products, including a motorised dish kit.

Questions

- a selection from this month's emails

If you are a new subscriber I'm afraid that you might find some of my replies a little blunt to the point of being rude. That's just the way I am after answering customers' questions for the last fourteen years. Please don't take offence. Sometimes I'm a little tired, ratty or impatient and it shows! Generally, if you ask for a free reply, you'll get what you pay for. If you DO have a question, PLEASE read the web site information and eBooks first. I get the same questions day after day because people can't be bothered to look.

More than half of my replies are never acknowledged, which implies that they weren't read. So don't be surprised if I keep my reply short. There's nothing more discouraging than to spend half an hour typing a comprehensive reply, only to have it bounce back as "undeliverable", or to have it completely ignored by the recipient.

I have a SKY+ box, as this has twin tuners - will this allow me to use one of the tuners to watch TV via a TV link and the other tuner to watch a different channel local to the Sky Box?

e.g Can I watch one Sky channel on one TV and another on another TV as the Sky+ box has two tuners (so you can watch one program and record another)?

I realise I need a separate cable between the two TV's.

Jamie

No, only one channel can be watched on a Sky Digibox because it has only one decoder and video output circuit.

Other channels can be recorded simultaneously because it records the raw (encrypted) transmissions.

I have purchased a TRIAX DDU from yourself and I am not sure about the wiring diagram.

Can I simply wire the two cables from the dish directly into the back of my SKY HD box, then take one cable from the SKY OUT up to the TRIAX box and feed 4 televisions from there playing the same channel as what is playing on the main set???

I dont want tp buy the TRIAX faceplate!!!

If so then what will the feed from the SKY box up to the TRIAX get plugged in to?

Many thanks

Jason P.

Hi, Jason.

The DDU-112 should be wired as shown on our web page, using the wall plates and other accessories listed:

http://www.satcure.com/tech/loftbox4.htm

Of course you can wire the LNB directly to the Sky Digibox but that rather defeats the point of using a Loft Box. You might as well return it and order a simple "SkyLink Compatible Splitter" instead, with as many outputs as you need.

Good day,

It took me a lot of time to summon courage to email you. It is a fact that we have not had any previous business dealings, but I strongly believe that with understanding and trust we can have a successful business relationship.

My name is Craig Jones, the Chief financial officer of New Zealand's Oil & Gas Company Ltd. For proper confirmation, visit http://www.nzog.com/staff

We have been on a project called The Kupe project. This project is to be the first phase development of gas field discoveries first made by New Zealand Oil and Gas (NZOG) in 1986. The project was given the final go ahead to move into the construction phase in July 2006. However, a large amount of design, assessment and pre-development work preceded this decision. For proper verification on this project, visit http://www.hydrocarbons-technology.com/projects/kupe/

I have access to very vital information that can be used to move a huge amount of money out of the project account to a secured account. I have done my homework very well .I have the machineries in place to get it done since I am still in active service. If it was possible for me to do it alone I would not have bothered contacting you, ultimately I need an honest foreigner to play an important role in the completion of this business deal.

Kindly get back to me for the next line of action if you are willing to commence. I look forward to meeting you in person and doing good business with you and please treat as confidential.

You can reach me on my private email : craig_jonescfo@yahoo.co.nz

Equipment made by: Grundig Sky

Model number on label or rear panel: GDS3000

November 2009 we had Sky+ installed in lounge and Grundig box was moved to dining room.I have no recollection of how old the Grundig is.It has worked perfectly since moving there and having new dish and wiring.

Yesterday evening the picture turned pixelated so I switched off and unplugged. When plugged back in "no satellite signal received" message.Unplugged and repeated over course of evening ?3 times.Same message. Then plugged in and no red or green light appeared.Still the case this morning.

Our dilemma is that we have been paying for multi room as part of the contract since November 2009. We intended to stop paying for multi room when the 12months were up and to (try and)use the Grundig sky box as a freesat box.

A friend's son used to work for Sky(installation).I may be able to ask him for help with a repair.(not sure how willing he would be though!)

SUZANNE

See http://www.satcure.com/gds200.htm

You can get your Grundig PSU repaired quite easily. Either DIY with our kit or get a repairer to do it for you.

I recently bought an Inverto quad LNB (LNB19) from you and can't seem to get it to work with my non-sky 80cm dish and my Sky+HD box. Should this lnb work with my Sky+HD box or do I need a Sky specific lnb?

Peter H.

Hi, Peter. It should work just fine. Unfortunately, your report is too vague for me to make any suggestions other than to read our technical pages.

See http://www.satcure.com/tech/lnb.htm#bestlnb

and http://www.satcure.com/tech/satmeter.htm

Good afternoon, I want to use wall plates to neaten up the cabling for a Sky+ box and a Technomate satellite box (which uses a single cable). Could you tell me if the PLATE4F wall plate can be used for this or do I need to use a double wall plate for Sky+ and a single one for the other dish?

Many thanks

Gary

Hi, Gary. If you use our plate with four connectors, you'll have one spare for when/if you upgrade to a twin-tuner PVR.

I hope this answers what I think you are asking.

Hi. Apologies for a basic question but I have scoured the internet for a simple answer and cannot find it. I am quite intelligent, can do basic wiring and work as an anaesthetist so must have some sort of manual dexterity.

Do you offer a product which allows me watch, and control, my Humax Freesat PVR in the room above that in which it is installed? I have tried wireless senders but they won't carry the remote signal. Does your "pipe Freesat around the house" product do the job?

Many thanks,

Tim

Yes, that's why it says "Suitable for any Freesat system."

At the weekend, we had the message that a new DVB service was found. When we retuned the DVD player, we lost BBC1 and BBC2. Incidentally, the signal for those 2 channels on the TV (Panasonic TX-26LXD70) has deteriorated so as to make them unwatchable. I have tried retuning the TV and the DVD recorder, but with no difference. All other channels are working.

This page should lead you to a solution:

http://www.satcure.com/tech/freeview_problems.htm

Hello,

Hope you guys can help us, looks like you know your business, I have tried the forum but I think our problem is very specific.

Due to building work we need to move our existing aerial so we have just bought a new Televes Dat45c/w MRD aerial to pointed it towards the recommended Reigate transmitter (which is located about 8 miles from us) and 100m of brand new double screened cable.

We have tried horizontal and Vertical mounting and various tweaks to direction but with the new aerial we are receiving a terribly snowy/distorted analogue signal and no digital channels whatsoever. Strange thing is our old aerial, which looks like the Contract type aerial shown on the email form submission page, connected with old cable and dodgy connections, gives fair analogue reception and a pretty good digital reception. This old aerial is pointing towards crystal palace transmitter. We thought we would future proof ourselves by installing a fancy high gain digital approved aerial!

So back to the new being worse than the old problem. The two simple questions to ask are these:

1: Do national grid HV power lines (i.e. the ones hanging from pylons) distort analogue/digital reception? About 30m from our house, between the line of sight of our house and Reigate transmitter are national grid Power cables. This in hindsight probably explains why our old aerial is pointing to Crystal Palace and not Reigate as the power lines do not interrupt the line of sight to crystal palace.

Yes, it's possible but by no means certain.

2: To test our new aerial we just used the whole drum of 100m cable. Would the length of cable create [too] great a signal loss to get a decent picture. We are using the high gain aerial with the MRD so it states a gain of 29dB max, but 100m of cable give an approx loss of 18dB.

Impossible to say without knowing the signal level. I assume you have set the aerial for vertical polarisation?

Our thoughts now are to swap our new yagi type aerial for a log-periodic type or an A band aerial and point it at Crystal Palace transmitter - this would point it away from the power lines, and be the correct type of aerial to pick up Crystal palace channels. Alternatively we could just move the old working aerial and fit the new cable to it keeping it pointed the direction it is now.

Could you give any hints or tips suggesting if our new logic is sound.

I don't have anything to add to the notes on this page:

http://www.satcure.com/tech/freeview_problems.htm

If you use Crystal Palace, the DAT45 certainly won't be ideal.

I have been planning an installation for about a year now, and have been doing significant reading, especially of your website and published book that I have bought from you.

My installation will be with a Quattro LNB together with a multiswitch. I have read up on the Triax TMP5x16. I have several questions before I begin ripping my walls up and installing (I will be laying network cables and points at the same time.) My loft space will have a cabinet to house the multiswitch, as close the aerials and dish as possible.

My questions really pertain to earthing. The house is detached and will supply only our needs. I intend to earth dish, aerials and external junction box (similar to the sandwich box one shown in your book), using a copper earthing conductor and ground spike. Internally, I intend to earth the multiswitch points using the earth supplied by the local electrical system.

Do you see any potential issues using two types of earth like this, or is there a more conventional way of doing it?

Also, do you sell this particular multiswitch and are there any reviews of this and similar multiswitches I could look at?

I think the TMP was superseded by the TMS which we sell, or vice versa. Whatever we supply will be the latest model.

Earthing of dish etc. is not a legal requirement in the UK and fairly pointless.

The need to earth the multiswitch is questionable in a single dwelling. I can't see any point but, if you want to earth it, get it done by a qualified electrician.

I currently have a Zinwell ZKF-BJ21 Single LNB which I want to replace with a Quad. My current spigot arm / LNB has a spigot pin which plugs through the arm. For this reason I specifically want to order a:

Mk2-3 MTI QUAD-S819010705 LNB

None of the other LNBs I have looked at seem to come with this spigot pin, so I am not sure if any other models will fit. However - when shopping online there is no way to choose which model you receive - you just pick a generic Quad LNB28. Also, you do not take sales calls on the phone so I cannot request this verbally.

Can you tell me how I order a specific LNB using the website? Or is it a case of ordering the generic and afterwards requesting the specific model?

Do you still carry Mk2-3 MTI QUAD-S819010705 LNB in stock?

Many thanks

Mike J.

See http://www.satcure.com/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm

Only the MK4 is manufactured now. It will fit some dishes with an adapter. If you specifically want the MTI you'll have to search for someone who has old stock.

I am going to install freesat.I am going to buy your LNB12(for use with a circular dish),I plan to buy your 50cm grey perforated disc (sic) which is conventionally shaped. If that is circular, these two items should work together O.K ? Will also be ordering co axial etc whichI am familar with.

Thanks, Peter.

Hi, Peter. All the LNBs with 40mm neck that we sell are suitable for all the dishes with 40mm LNB clamp which we sell.

Hello there, I have just had installed through BBC help for disabled people, a freesat satellite dish with single LNB. I want to have this extended to the rest of the house, I do not know yet what receivers I will be using but as I have a 3 year old sky+ box, I will probably use that in the meantime with a freesat card.

I wish to purchase from you a Quad LNB but don't know which.

I can tell you its an oval mini dish and the LNB fitted is a Triax single universal LNB TSI004 part no 300432

I trust you can advise me on this issue

Kind regards

Michael N.

Hi, Michael. See: http://www.satcure.com/accs/quad_sky_lnb.htm

If your dish is a new Sky MK4 (the LNB support arm is an inverted U section) then our MK4 LNB will fit.

If it's an earlier Mk2/MK4 dish then our LNB will fit with the adapter.

If it's a very early channel Master dish, as shown, then we can't help.

I want to install Freesat at my home and I have 4 TV's in individual rooms. I intend to buy 4 individual Humax HDPVR sets.

I was intending to purchase a 90cm dish with an octo LNB and wire back 2 coax's (sic) to each TV.

Basically I would like a technical solution with a listing of material to purchase so that I can turn it around to you for supply.

I have clear line of sight (country farmhouse)and a large chimney stack to mount the dish on.

Can you help.

Hi there - I intend to buy a Triax 333112 DDU 8 way loft box from you, which will be wired in line with your wiring diagram to connect a main TV and Sky HD box in the lounge, one multiroom sky box and four other tv's linked to the lounge Sky HD box. Along with the Sky inputs I will connect a normal TV aerial that will be located in the loft. I want to be able to watch sky and terrestrial tv on each tv.

I am in the Meridian region using the Rowridge transmitter, and my neighbours have good signal with aerials in the loft.

My father always uses your company for his system in his motor caravan (I call it a campervan) and is very satisfied hence I will be using your company too.

My question is with regard to the location of the loft box, which I want to site in the cupboard under the stairs rather than the loft, so the cable connecting the aerial to the loft box will be 9 metres long.

I see in the guidance on your site the loft box should be located close to the aerial, is 9 metres a definite no no? Obviously this will be OK for the Sky reception, do you anticipate a problem with the terrestrial tv signal?

Thanks in advance,

Gareth D.

Obviously the Loft Box expects a reasonably strong signal. So the answer to your question is "it depends". If your aerial signal is strong, then maybe the small loss in 9m of cable won't matter.

More importantly, the cable must not be placed where it will pick up interference because the Loft Box will happily feed this to every TV point!

Height of TV aerial: 2 metres

That's much too low.

Type of TV aerial cable: Old cable
Freeview Make Model: Digilogic DSTB1000 digital free-view receiver
Type of amplifier: None
Type of socket: I don\'t have a socket
Fault History: I will explainhistory below
My location is: WS13

As soon as SKY went HD TV my freeview started playing up - I'd press the remote and it would only threw up the freeview menu when it wanted to.

Let me stop you right there because this must be the clue but what exactly do you mean by "As soon as SKY went HD TV"?

Did you get someone to install a Sky HD system? Think about what physically changed in your house.

Anyway, I recommend you post this report in a public forum where knowledgeable people will help you find the answer.

I want to upgrade my current single output LNB to twin or quad to allow me to use SKY+. I've identified that my dish is a legacy MKV2/3 from the arm dimensions. The dish is currently wall mounted, but sits immediately above an extension roof, so that the current LMB is only 1cm or so above the roof tile below. The Quad LMB if mounted with the cables coming out the bottom would not have clearance. My options seem to be.

1) Move the dish.
2) Mount the LMB upside down.
3) Re mount the entire dish upside down.
4) Find an LMB with outputs on the side/top.

What would you recommend please?

Many thanks

Carl

Hi, Carl. Option 4 doesn't exist so that leaves 1 to 3, any of which should work if the LNB is at the focal point.

Be sure to waterproof the LNB connections properly.

I've just bought a Samsing Sky HD box set up in the same room as my Sky+ box and I'm having the problem of my Sky+ remote operating the HD box. I saw the tip about modifying the Sky+ remote by pressing the select and blue key etc. but it didn't work as my Sky+ remote is a revision 4 model. If I buy the revision 8 remote I've seen on your website will it solve the problem. This is the only reason I need to get a new Sky+ remote so although from what I've seen I think it will do the job I want it to do I thought it is worth while checking with you before I buy.

Thanks

Jonathan

Hi, Jonathan. The Sky+ remote is supposed to operate the Sky+HD Digibox. Sky obviously thought it was a good idea.

All I can suggest is that you blank off (or disconnect) the front panel I/R sensors in both Digiboxes and use a "SPC4 Super Plus Combiner." connected to the RF2 sockets, plus a "magic eye".

See http://www.satcure.com/accs/page3.htm#suplus

Here goes, Next week I am having a sky sat system installed in my home. However I have a motorhome on which I am having fitted a Camos 40cm satellite system with free sat box. This was ordered before the home sky system. Can I put a sky box on the motorhome, if so which one? can i take the sky box from home, if so what if any new connections do I need? can it work on a 12 volt system or only when I have electric hook up. can you think of anything else I need to be aware of?

Many thanks in advance

Regards

Sue G.

Hi, Sue. Unfortunately, your information is vague so I can't give a comprehensive answer.

Your caravan dish will need to be aligned on Astra-2 for Sky.

Dependent on whether you have standard Sky or Sky+ you'll need one or two cables connected to the LNB on the dish.

You'll need a 12vDC - 230vAC sine-wave inverter to power the Digibox UNLESS you get a second-hand BSKYB1000 "Javelin" Minibox, which runs off 12 volts.

I have just fitted your RELKIT 33 JS to my Thomson 8215.

However the Sky HD (only) channels still freeze / pixelate / blue screen. Also, but not necessarily at the same time, loss of sound.

My other Thomson Sky HD box, using the same octo LNB has no problems. This has also been fitted with your capacitor kit.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Best regards.

Warwick Jones.

I have two thompson sky hd boxes DS18215WDR-89, both work ok but neither record, play back, pause or any other feature other than stright forward watching! I have tried all the ways of full reset including powering up with right and left arrows pressed but nothing happens.

1, Do I need new hard drives?
2, Do you sell them and can you send me a link to the right page so I buy the right product?
3, what size is my current drive and what size can I upgrade to economically? I guess I can up to a masive size but at huge cost. Maybe a size or two up?
4, Do you send instructions on replacing hard drive.

I need to get these boxes up and running asap. If you don't sell the hard drives can you recomend someone who does?

Thanks for your help.

Steve

We don't stock Hard drives. The profit margin is way too low.

Before replacing the Hard Drive you MUST replace the faulty PSU capacitors.

Hi, I write on behalf on my grandparents who purchased a TV with integrated freeview late last yr.

They get brilliant signal in the day but as soon as it starts to get dark, its bad to the point where there is no point trying to watch tv.

I can get all of the specifics of what equipment they have/aerials etc but wondered if you think you can help?

Hi, I Purchased a TEL26 BLACK 1595 TELEVES DAT45 BLACK aerial from you with all the necessary accessories & a Wolsey WFAV25 Masthead amplifier from you a couple of months ago. My son and I installed it at his property at NG12 . We carried out the installation with careful reference to your manual 'Freeview Bible'. The installation went well and we fitted the masthead amplifier in the loft and tuned the nearest television in. Most of the channels appeared to be there, however my son was convinced that things were not right, he thought reception was not as good as it should be also not all of the channels that should be available were there. Reluctantly I agreed investigate to test the cables, so we disconnected everything and discovered that the cabled from the aerial to the amplifier had an apparent a dead short between the conductor and F plug/screen. To find out whether it was the cable or aerial we had to disconnect it from aerial. A little time went by before we were able to remove the aerial and disconnect the cable to test it, but now we have I have found that the fault is within the connection box on the aerial (I think it is referred to as a Dipole box). I have removed this from the aerial and wondered if you could provide a replacement under warranty?

Many thanks,

Kevin S.

Hi, Kevin.

A folded dipole will always measure short-circuit at DC. It has a characteristic impedance of 300 Ohms (reduced to 75 Ohms by the presence of the director elements) only in the UHF band. It is simply a metal loop and is highly unlikely to have a fault.

See http://www.electronics-tutorials.com/antennas/antenna-basics.htm

However, I wouldn't recommend any so-called "wideband Yagi" aerial for use with Waltham transmitter, for the reasons given on this page:

http://www.satcure.com/tech/best_aerial.htm#graph

Because Waltham transmits on channels 23 and 26 as well as higher channels, I'd recommend a log-periodic aerial. This is a true "wideband" aerial and will give a much more consistent signal level across the UHF band.

Having said that, the DAT45, whilst not optimal, ought to give reasonable results so you may have some other fault, such as excessive signal level. It's impossible to say without knowing which UHF channels are giving a problem. Please make sure you've read all the notes on this page:

http://www.satcure.com/tech/freeview_problems.htm

Hi

Just upgraded to a Amstrad DRC9895-C 1TB SkyHD box and my cabinet IR remote extender does not work with this box. I read somewhare that Amstrad uses IRDA.

That's not possible since it uses exactly the same remote control as all other Sky+HD Digiboxes. Therefore any SkyLink compatible remote extender "magic eye" should work.

I have a Thomson DSI8210. Having followed your instructions I have identified that the power supply PSU has failed. Typically you say that an indication of this is when the capacitors are either leaking or bulging ˆ I have at least 5 that I can see are bulging and 2 which have a brown stuff that has leaked out of them.

I need to get hold of a replacement PSU for the Sky+ box as a matter of urgency and wondered, as you are only just down the road, if there is any way I could visit you TODAY with the cash and faulty PSU board, to do an exchange.

Please, please, I need your help as I cannot do without my sky+ box.

Penny M.

Hi, Penny. Unfortunately, as stated on our web site, we can not accept callers.

Hi, My PSU has failed in my Thompson Sky+ Box, I have removed the PSU board from the sky box and at least 3 capacitors appear to be blown and 2 have a discharge on them. I'm in urgent need of getting this fixed with your exchange power supply service, I assume this will use the same components as supplied in the mkII kit?

As I live in Shrewsbury I was hoping for a same day fix, can I drive to Telford and drop this off with you and pick it up later the same day after you‚ve fixed it, hopefully tomorrow if possible (Tuesday)? I can pay cash in hand if required, or can place an order on your website beforehand, whatever is easiest for you?

Thanks,

Richard.

Many thanks for your great products, I have previously repaired two SKY HD boxes with your kits, and they are working great.

I have just repaired my third box and it says no sat signal being received.

I have worked through your page of suggestions, caps are all correctly positioned, Switched off LNB and 22kHZ, also tried Single feed mode. I have also swapped the LNB feeds on the inputs of the box, everything I have tried hasn't made a single bit of difference.

I am using a location that one of my other Sky boxes is working correctly in, so I don't believe it to be anything external.

Is this something I should send to Digifix or do you have anything else that I may try.

Many thanks

Philip C.

Make sure that LNB power and 22kHz are ON not OFF!

See http://www.satcure.com/psu/

Dear SatCure

I have reviewed the various blogs on the Thomson DSI8215 Sky HD Receiver. I have also seen that some of the capacitors are 'bulging'as I opened the box as per instructions. I am getting the 'no satellite signal'; error 28 or 29 on some channels which I am trying to view. Capacitor R15 has not blown as the box is still working and I am still receiving some channels. Input 2 has no signal at all. The box is ca. 3 years old. I am assuming a Thomson 'PSU failure'.

Question :

- as per your website do you physically need my PSU returned to the UK or could I just order a refurbished PSU and have it posted to my address in Switzerland as otherwise it may take a really long time to get everything back and installed

- do I need a complete PSU or just the capacitors replaced ? is this a different price to revamping the entire PSU. As indicated I am a techie bozo so soldering capacitors will not be in my competency range

- the total cost of PSU overhaul is ca. £50 (incl postage). Is it your recommendation to repair the PSU and potentially also upgrade the hard drive or just 'buy a new box'. Your honest opinion requested. I have heard that the Thomson boxes are duds but until now we haven't experienced problems

- Does it make sense to also upgrade the hard drive if I upgrade the PSU, and if yes, which drive would you recommend.

sorry for the long email and I hope I have not exhausted your patience too much.

Best Regards

Tania O.

I received part 2 of my order today and have trie to install the FRI31 fringe splitter. I ordered this as on the website it states that it is compatable with TVLink, however I've found this isn't true. Sure I get the RF2 output on the other tv's but am unable to change channel via the magic eye. Is there something obvious I can try otherwise I'd like to return the unit please.

Look forwards to hearing from you

Chris

Hi, Chris. The FRI31 is a set-back amplifier and most certainly NOT SkyLink compatible nor compatible with the tvLINK. I'm sorry that you were confused by the heading below it.

Our SkyLink compatible amplifiers are listed below the set-back amplifiers:-

Hi, just to let you know that the MK4 Sky Quad NB shown on your site (http://www.satcure.com/tech/LNBpics.htm) now comes with a old-style converter mount as standard in its box. These are made by MicroElectronics Inc and have part number QUAD LNBF. Only the new-style mount has the spirit level which cannot (normally) be transferred to the older style mount.

Just thought it might help with a little detail.

Cheers

PS Great site!

Paul

Thanks, Paul. I checked with our supplier and the old-style converter is not supplied with the LNB. That's why we offer it separately. You are correct about the spirit level.

This is simply a request further to my order xxxx.

I purchased the 25m WF100 to come with connectors on the end, could you make sure these connectors are male and can connect to the RF2 of my Sky + box and the other end into a SLx magic eye plug.

You ordered as follows:

WF100BL25M Black length 25 metres Qty:1 at £15.00
FIT2FS F connector fitted to both ends of black lead Qty:1 at £1.99

Hello. I bought the above unit in April 2008 and immediately upgraded the HDD to a Samsung 1TB model using Copy+ to transfer programmes from our old Sky+ box. It's been fine since but the HDD is now 80% full and becoming temperamental. I therefore removed it to backup in case it fails completely but when I put it back in the Thomson it did not work properly - when I power up nothing happens at all for 15-30 seconds, the fan and disk then start spinning but none of the leds light up - not even the red standby. There is no signal from the HDMI output although the aerial feed through the box works OK. I've left it for a couple of hours but nothing else happens.

Does this sound like a dead box or may it be possible to repair it?

Thanks,

Peter

Hi, Peter. Since you can hear signs of life it's obviously not dead.

Hello your webpage is heaven sent. I am about to embark on installing my own sat disc and cabling for my Sky+ HD and would like a couple questions answered.

I have ordered via amazon a host of spares and parts, however your sight [site?] suggest I paint the cables. Can you tell me what paint I need please?

Anything that sticks and gives UV protection.

I have the silicon [silicone?] grease on the rubber boots on order to. When I had alot on another website the kit I have bought says it comes with CT63. I hope this is not the case and they supply WF65.

It's the same, except CT63 hasn't been manufactured since 2005 so check its condition.

Finally as conduits cannot be bend easily my plan is to you the cable off the wall with the paint then at a right angle I will use the conduit in the balcony going into the living room. Does that sound ok?

I don't understand "to you the cable.."

Anyway, I think you are asking me a question relating to personal choice, not technical.

Reason I am asking is I am paranoid about bending the cable, is there a conduit you supply with bends init for a double sky + hd cable?

Sorry, no.

Equipment made by: Amstrad Sky
Model number on label or rear panel: DRX890-C

I have a T140 white 4-way amplifier with IEC connectors GLO71 bought from you in 2007 (SAT015759). It sends RF signal to 4 outlets in the house. We have Magic Eyes on 3 of them (the 4th is the TV connected to the main digibox). Two of the magic eyes work OK. The third started playing up about 2 months ago and was intermittently not working (it has worked fine for 5 years or so). Jiggling the connection between the eye and the RF cable got it going again. It stopped working completely abot 2 weeks ago. We took the magic eye back to the supplier who checked it (it recently replaced one that wasn't working and was certified as faulty) and it was working OK and we tried an alternative eye which also didn't work.

What happens now is that if the magic eye is connected to the RF cable, there is no light on. When I plug it into the television, then the light on the eye comes on very faintly. I have tried a different RF Cable (supplied by you) and this hasn't changed anything. I have checked the connections on the amplifier in the loft and all appears OK.

As I see it, the eye should be powered (i.e. light on) even if not plugged into the TV. Therefore my conclusion is either a faulty output on the amplifier or possibly a problem with the cable and/or socket to the room.

The socket is not a wall plate, it is the older type of socket which is attached to the wall and you plug in the cable at about a 30 degree angle. I have tested the voltage at the socket and it is only about 1 V or less and have removed the socket and tested the cable and that is the same. Does this means the amplifier in the loft has gone faulty? The other recent change (about 6 weeks ago) was from an Amstrad Sky+ box to the current HD box. Does the new box struggle to power 4 outputs whereas the old one was OK? From memory I think it was playing up before we changed boxes, but I may be wrong.

Fit an OCTO LNB, Ken, if you can find one to match your dish. (You don't mention the type of dish or fitting. There are no C120 flange OCTOs.)

Alternatively, you might prefer to fit an Invacom Quattro LNB and connect it to a multiswitch.

Hi, Alex. As it's under warranty, contact Sky (or your supplier if not Sky) and ask for a replacement. Be sure to write them a letter asking for compensation to cover lost viewing hours and lost recordings. Send by Recorded Delivery.

Hi, I wonder if you can spare a minute.

I recently bought from a friend his dsi8210, he had gone on hols for a week and left the unit running as per usual. On return it no longer functioned. I was convinced that I would be able to repair the unit and thus win a cheap sky box, which I currently dont have.

On receipt, the front panel led glowed dimly. Nothing else functioned and the HDD didnt spin up. I did some research (web) and replaced most caps that I had available in my junk box. On completion, nothing at all.. A very faint ticking sound from the smps.

I ordered the full kits from your site, arrived today, and replaced all caps and semiconductors as per the kit. Reconnected power, front panel led now pulses.. No HDD spin up.. Disconnected HDD power supply lead, still the same.

Measured 3.3v rail, it was pulsing.. Disconnected main 15pin connector from main-board.. Pins 12,13 now stable, but not quite 3.3v, think it was more like 3.4V. Havent gone anyfurther with my diagnostics, I am without manual or circuit, and worse still, in spain..

Do you think there is some form of short cct on the mainboard, bringing down the supply rail or causing the smps to hic-cup, or are there resets to be done in order to kick it into life?

simon p.

By using the wrong capacitors you may have caused more damage to the PSU or mother board. Or you may have left an invisible filament of solder on the board or fitted a capacitor the wrong way round.

I recommend you buy a PSU off eBay and use it to test the Digibox. If it works, you've solved it. If it doesn't, you have two PSUs to sell.

Hi Martin

I trawled the web some more... connected things backup and held left and right buttons together whilst applying mains... waited for wheel in centre to light and pressed select on front panel.

Now the unit appears to function and all the voltages are bang on..

But there is no output on the rear scart at all, no on screen display or anything.

The HDD seems to spin up, i pressed play and ffwd, but nothing happens. Is the HDD knackered? where is the gui stored, on the HDD or on some ram on the MB.

The TV seems to recognise that the scart is active (when the thomson is turned on the scart is recognised!!), but the TV reports back that there is no signal.

simon p.

Unfortunately, as I retired from repairs 10 years ago, I have nothing to add to my previous reply except that you should click on all the Product Information links in your "Keep-me" email and read the info. Everything I know about is mentioned there.

After following the useful info on your site I'm building a (big) list of stuff to buy from you in order to give me at least 8 satellite LNB connections for my home.

I did think of using an Octo LNB, but am now seriously considering a quattro LNB and a multiswitch with 8, 12 or 16 outputs. Having 8 x PF100 cables hanging from the dish doesn't light my fire and it doesn't offer any chance of future expansion.

We don't sell PF100. We do sell WF100 in six colours.

I will then use some Triax triplex or quad outlets (that you sell) around the house and also a handful of magic eyes. It will all feed two Sky+ boxes, several Freesat TV's and a couple of PC's with Hauppauge Freesat/Freeview/Analogue cards and PVR software. Don't worry about the PC bit, I'm good at that sort of stuff.

Our Freeview signal is poor, so the aerial signal will be via a mast head amp mounted inside the loft as close to the wall as I can get it.

Three questions:

1. I plan to put the return uplink from a Sky box as the (5th)UHF input into the multiswitch (together with DAB and CCTV signals with a combiner). Do all of your multiswitches allow IR bypass for Sky? If not, which makes/models should I be looking at? I don't fancy having to use by-pass leads.

No multiswitches provide I/R bypass. Not even with a "bypass" device.

3. Do any of your multiswitches have enough inputs for Quattro LNB plus Sky UHF output, plus DAB, plus maybe CCTV so that I don't have to use a combiner?

No. Multiswitch designs are somewhat outdated.

3. Am I crazy? Should I just buy an Octo LNB and the Triax DDU112 Loft Box that you sell and endure the pain of dropping a few more cables for the outlets?

I think it will provide a closer solution but the DDU handles only 4 LNB connections in total.

Unfortunately, I can't offer a simple solution.

Our Freeview reception has never been brilliant, but seemed to improve once Mendip went fully digital. But now we seem to go through phases where one or other of the BBC or ITV or Channel 4 channels freeze every few seconds, never managing to stream continuously for more than 30-40 seconds before starting to pixellate/stutter before frrezing, and sometimes displaying "No Signal" before reappearing.

I want to get Hotbird in my flat but am unable to use a large external dish (80 cm). However, I have read about a flat square dish that performs as good as a circular 60cm dish and can be mounted behind my window. I have a clear view to the satellite and would only need a short 2m length of coax, so few losses there.

The question is: do you think that I will get a good enough signal?

Peter E.

Hot Bird should be receivable with a Sky minidish outdoors.

If you put any dish behind glass, the reception will be determined by the type and thickness of the glass and by the angle between the dish and the pane. Some types of modern glass will not let signal through. Get hold of a second-hand Sky dish for testing purposes.

There is no advantage in having a flat "dish", other than aesthetics.

Hi, John. Unfortunately, you haven't stated what you want to achieve by connecting an aerial to an LNB.

Maybe you want the signals to share a single cable?

See http://www.satcure.com/tech/terindex.htm
"6. How to combine aerials/LNB into one cable?"

Maybe you want to get Freeview and Sky in all rooms without adding more cables?

See http://www.satcure.com/tech/satindex.htm
"85. Multiswitch - add more receivers".

If those don't help, take a look at the other Technical pages.

Please note that Technical questions should be sent using the Technical Help forms and not my private email form.

Hi I have two sky HD boxes running off a Sky Quattro LNB on a sky minidish.

I assume you mean a Quad-output LNB, since a Quattro works only with a multiswitch system.

The signal strength is about 80% on my new amstrad HD box and on my old Thomsom box (about 2 years old)60% LNB1 and about 70% LNB2! Cable runs are 20 - 25m to Amstrad and 15m approx to Thompson.

That's an excellent signal indication but bear in mind that it IS only an indication at a single frequency (the default transponder frequency) and every Digibox will give a different reading. In addition, any Thomson DSI8215 that has not had its PSU upgraded is likely to give an inaccurate reading. If you want best possible performance, upgrade the PSU.

I want to improve the signal strength so I do not lose the signal, which I have done when we have had bad weather. I also want to fit an 8 way LNB. I assume that I should fit your 60cm dish & LNB, please can you tell me if this is the best option?

I can't answer questions relating to "best" unless you describe what you mean by "best". Our dishes and LNBs are all suitable for use with all modern satellite TV receivers. You should be able to fit a Sky OCTO LNB to your Sky minidish, provided that it's not too old.

Also I have bought a signal finder from B&Q I have used this to re-align my mini dish to get the best signal as per the readings above. Is this suitable to use for aligning your dish?

We don't sell B&Q equipment so I'm not familiar with your meter.

See how to use a very basic Satfinder meter, here:
http://www.satcure.com/tech/satmeter.htm

Such meters will work with any modern LNB and dish.

Happy Customers

THANK YOU

Re your email to me:-

Just to say, very many thanks to you for posting off a single F connector, that I failed to order by mistake.

A brilliant service - thank you!

THANK YOU

Thanks for having a really informative website - it allowed me to diagnose the strange problems I was having with my Thomson SKY+HD box, and the psu capacitor replacement kit has fixed the problems. I am a happy customer who will recommend you to others.

THANK YOU

Thanks, Satcure, I carried out your simple to follow instructions. Box performing as new.

Thanks Again

Duncan

THANK YOU

Many thanks for the kit. I had previously repaired with a kit I got from EBay and they failed to send the large capacitor.

Also after a month of running I was experiencing the odd failed recording again.

So now unsoldered all the capacitors and replaced with your kit. All working fine now and the fan is even stopping now ( as opposed to running all the time ).

Just wish I bought your kit from the start.

THANK YOU

Many thanks for your good service, prices and fast delivery. Also, the detailed tech info on your website makes it much easier to order the right gear!

It's rare to find a company that trades online and doesn't let you down or fob you off with 'fabricated' delivery dates,

Regards,

THANK YOU

Thank you very much for such a swift response. Your service is truly excellent and you keep the customer informed all the way. I posted my faulty PSU on Monday morning 10am and the rebuilt PSU was with me by Wed 3.30pm. This is a truly outstanding turnaround and one that I highly appreciate and value.

Thank you once again and I will wholeheartedly recommend you to friends and colleagues who may have similar issues.

Thanks from Australia

Hi Martin,

I recently dowloaded your ebook understanding sky digital satellite tv. Not that I am trying to receive Sky in Australia, mind you.

Whilst a lot of the material was very Sky specific, your general information was very informative. Great work.

I tried to explain to you about satellite tv in australia, but your spam filter was so agressive I could not get the message to be sent. Sorry.

Again, thanks for a very informative book.

Regards...Bob

THANK YOU

Many thanks to you for the invaluable advice given by your excellent website. The dish arrived earlier than expected, went together with no problems and works a treat - and your advice on setting it up was excellent, clear and enabled me to avoid the Sky re-installation charge.

Well done

Thanks

Andrew W.

THANK YOU

Thanks, worked like you said it could if followed instructions.

Having some soldering etc. skills, changing the parts was not too difficult, evidence of bulging electrolytic caps as described.

all channels now work and i'm hoping the list of other problems have gone also??!!!

Thanks again

MR PHILLIP P.

THANK YOU

Dish and brackets all just arrived and checked. All in perfect condition.

Thank you for your excellent service.
